Humans are Weird

Cas frowned as he pushed through the crowded halls of the space station, turning the music on his headphones up and trying to ignore some of the less travelled aliens staring at him.

Eventually he found his dorm, hidden behind a couple making out in the halls. A few glares and curses later and he was laying face down on his bed, bags and suitcases scattered around next to him.

"First day is not going well."

Re: Humans are Weird

Xriegleskua paused outside of his dorm room door, taking in a deep breath before pushing it open, the signs on the door reading 'Cal' and 'Rie,' the alien's given nickname, since most found his full name too much of a mouthful to pronounce. There were rumors of more humans turning up at Intergalactic Academy, and he sincerely hoped he wouldn't be paired with one. Sure, in order to finish his biomedical engineering degree, he'd have to get up close and personal with humans, both alive and deceased, but he wasn't sure if he was ready for that quite yet.

He nearly felt his heart stop as he stared at the human on the bed, carefully sitting on his own once he got over the initial shock, setting his Personal Pocket Dimension on the desk beside his bed, the weird orb containing all he'd need to get settled in and then some instead of a small army of pesky suitcases. He took in a deep breath, voice coming out in a slight squeak as he mumbled an accented 'h-hello."

Cas, barely hearing Rie, was slow to sit up and slide his headphones down around his neck. He tried to smile in what he hoped was friendly, not good socializing with even his own species. "Uh, hi. I guess we're roommates? I'm Cas."

He shifted awkwardly, biting his lip at the tension in the room. He got up after a moment to unpack, trying to distract himself.

"Rie," the alien said, pressing a button on the PPD to set up a desk, complete with a computer, chair, and lamp. "So, um... what are you studying?" He asked, just to fill the awkward silence.

"Uh, music! You?" Cas glanced at Rie, just shoving his empty suitcases under his bed and leaving his backpack on the bed. "Have you, uh. Have you met a human before?"

"Interspecies biomedical engineering," Rie explained, then shook his head. "Um, no, I can't say I have..." He thought humans would be much... scarier. Considering the rumors. But this human seemed nice, if a little odd looking. But to be fair, from the pictures Rie had seen, he thought all humans were odd looking.

"Then it's a good thing I'm on the small size, if you got some sports major you would've fainted." Cas laughed a little, relaxing as the tension eased and he got used to Rie. "I'm not really that scary, I promise."

"Isn't that what a scary person would say?" Rie asked, though he couldn't help but smile. "No, you don't really seem that scary at all, but I've read all about humans and what your species can do and live through is terrifying on its own. And with how fast you can procreate, I'm surprised there's not more of you here! Given the statistics, the Academy's human to other species ratio should be, what, 1-to-twenty? And at an Academy with around two-thousand attendants, that would mean that there should be at least a hundred humans wandering around, but as far as the Academy's enrollment records go, there's... five." Rie pushed his glasses up his nose with a frown. He had studied the mating cycles and rituals of humans, and since there was no disease spreading that would cause their numbers to die out, he wasn't sure why humans were becoming so rare.

Cas went quiet, a frown taking the place of his friendly smile. He shook his head, flopping down onto his bed and looking a mixture of angry and sad. "There are species trying to exterminate us. Most able youth are off fighting back. I'm not so good with that, and I just avoided the draft."

"It seems ridiculous to cause an entire species to go extinct just because they're seen as a threat," Rie said, shuffling a stack of papers on his desk before flipping through them. "At the rate that humans are 'disappearing,' the entire race could be exterminated in... five, maybe six basic space years?"
